At the Newhouse School, we believe in writing everything as though it were for a mass audience. So the magazine critiques that our graduate-level magazine editing students research and write are now the grist for this blog. The students pick whichever magazine they wish to critique — not necessarily the Usual Suspects — and work with their professor to get their critiques road-tested and ready for the world. The editing course is part of Newhouse’s Magazine, Newspaper and Online Journalism program. The classes in 2008 are taught by Mark Obbie. In 2007, Obbie and Jim Shahin taught them.
